KTF, Microsoft join forces to develop mobile browser

KTF, the country's second-largest mobile carrier said yesterday it would join forces with Microsoft Korea to develop a next-generation mobile browser, allowing subscribers to use a wider variety of wireless Internet content.

The browser, to debut in July this year, is expected to enable KTF subscribers to use not only the carrier's own wireless Internet content but also the content of its competitors.

The move comes as the country's three mobile carriers adopt different wireless Internet browser standards, potentially limiting the compatibility of content among subscribers.

KTF said the joint development of the next-generation mobile browser would make it possible for subscribers to bypass different browser formats.

"Wireless Internet content providers can cut costs dramatically by developing content for the next-generation mobile browser without rolling out content to satisfy three different formats," the company said.

KTF said mobile handset developers need not pay an extra royalty to Microsoft for the next-generation browser as the Korean mobile carrier is in charge of handling the source code and licensing.

The company said content providers together could slash costs by as much as tens of billions of won a year by streamlining the wireless Internet content development.
