Sorry, Nadine, those are all examples of REforestation. I've been over many of those tracts of marginal farmland and they were all forested before being DEforested by the farmers. Sometimes the best method of REforestation is simply to get out of the way, which is what happened in New England.

This is true, however: The US is more heavily forested today than it was 100 or 150 years ago. More deer and like critters too.

Much of the early DEforestation was carried out in order to provide forage and hay for horses, which were the main power source of the times.

Before Columbus, there were many more natives than commonly believed. Many more. They practiced deforestation as well, insofar as their technology permitted.
