Hensarling Comments on Senate Fiasco

By Andrew Roth

From Congressman Jeb Hensarling's office (he was elected with Club member support in 2002):

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congressman Jeb Hensarling (R-TX), Chairman of the Republican Study Committee (RSC), issued the following statement after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) denounced Speaker Nancy Pelosi's (D-CA) House-passed earmark disclosure requirements after Senator Jim DeMint (R-SC) added it as an amendment to the weaker Senate bill.

"It is hardly surprising that Democratic unity couldn't even withstand their very first legislative initiative. Their 100 hour honeymoon has turned into a 16 hour train wreck," said Chairman Hensarling. "Although they managed to play nice during the campaign season, this drama between Democratic Leaders reinforces that Democrats still cannot walk the walk when it comes to fiscal accountability. On just their fifth vote of the 110th Congress, Democrat leaders are now officially opposing common sense earmark reform."

Earlier this evening, the Senate rejected an attempt by Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) to prohibit Senator DeMint's amendment on earmark disclosure requirements. Senator Durbin's attempt was rejected by a vote of 51-46, with the majority of Democrats voting against the amendment. Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA) then blocked adoption of the amendment, ensuring its defeat.

"I am sure Speaker Pelosi is discouraged that her own party would derail one of her top legislative priorities so early in this Congress," said Hensarling.
