Sometimes that gets so messy; like when we don't like the winner.

1. If the Palestinians elected Hamas on the platform of destroying Israel, then they are reaping what they have sown.

2. However, if they elected Hamas on the platform that they are not as corrupt as Fatah, then have reaped what they have sown (because they support Arafat and Fatah for so many years).

3. If they have elected Hamas in order to fulfill the destrucion of the very democratic electoral system, then it's not really a democracy and we don't have to "like" them..

The heart of democracy is that people should have the right to choose their government, and bear the repercussions/benefits of that choice.

Also, Rumsfeld was not a government official at the time, and his mission was to see if Saddam was willing to take the necessary steps to permit the US to remove his regime from the "terrorist country" list.

He failed to positively respond and thus, the US was forbidden from selling his weapons.

And while you're bringing up Saddam, recall that the Reagan administration also orchested the Iran weapons transfer in order to win their cooperation in obtaining the release of US hostages in Lebanon.

Thus, we played both sides when our national interests suited it.
