Health Care Hypocrisy
UFCW Leaders Fail Members, Attack Wal-Mart Instead

UFCW leaders are apparently outraged to learn that more Wal-Mart employees are enrolling in company-sponsored health insurance plans. As a result, more than 90 percent of Wal-Mart associates now have health insurance. Additionally, far more Wal-Mart associates are eligible for company-sponsored health insurance than the industry average. But imagine how they'd fare if they were represented by a union:

Rick Icaza, president of Los Angeles-based UFCW Local 770, said in a statement Monday that 92 percent of Ralphs employees hired since the lockout still don't have employer-provided health insurance.

The above passage is the legacy of the UFCW leaders' infamous Southern California grocery strike of 2003-04, which continues to devastate dues-paying members to this day.

We understand that UFCW leaders must be frustrated that their own failures have left 92% of these employees without company-sponsored coverage, but why are they instead attacking a company where 90% of employees have insurance? Is it any wonder that members are abandoning their union?
