Z,

how about Iran, Syria/Lebanon, SA? Bush himself described Saddam the other day as "one of the worst dictators in the Middle East." "one of the"

It's a tough neighborhood... Iranian Ayatolahs are no picnic either.

The Arab world is different. I may sound racist, but there are two important factors: first off, the "countries" are artificial imperial creations; the countries of the former Soviet Union broke apart, for the most part, into countries that made ethnic sense. Second, there's this whole "culture of death" and widespread fundamentalism.

I have been thinking along the same lines. It may be a little defeatist to think that. Remember, there are millions of good people living there. I live in NYC, and I believe you do to somewhere in the area. I meet the immigrants from there, I can have good conversations with them, most blend just fine, they are fine with American style of living. They would like their native countries to be free and democratic. Most Iraqis in the US were enthusiastic about toppling Saddam.

Because there are way too many parties who have an interest in that not happening. Lotsa forces at work here.

The US State Department is one of those forces...
