Pro Bono or not, why is it so terrible that a prosecutor know every last detail surrounding the retainment of a lawyer on the behalf of a defendant?

I don't spend a lot of time around court rooms, but I thought it was part of a lawyers job to know as much about the accused as possible including who his advocates are and why.
