TDMA nets said to be riskier than CDMA nets in 3G

US: Wireless carriers which use CDMA technology run less of a risk of their debt ratings being downgraded as they install 3G systems than wireless carriers which use TDMA technology, according to Moody's Investors Service. TDMA is very limited in the support of data transmission, so TDMA carriers have overlaid their systems with GSM as they move towards 3G, according to Moody's. The cost of overlaying the systems has adversely affected ratings, according to James Veneau, VP and senior analyst at Moody's. Cingular Wireless, AT&T Wireless Services and other TDMA operators may invest over USDlr5 bil in network upgrades. However, TDMA carriers shifting to GSM may have a long-term edge, according to Veneau.
