The "misery index" fits perfectly into Twain's third level of lies. Of course people are concerned about unemployment, tuition costs, health care, etc., but the attempt to create and/or exploit such a "misery index" is pure manipulation of people's genuine hardships.

Is it? If it's true and meaningful, who cares? The index, as I understand its purpose, is very applicable to those around me, so it makes sense to me.

When your base is the "haves" and "have mores" as Bush has suggested, then its hard to understand how the war in Iraq, rising deficits, lagging employment etc is hurting anyone. The rich have never felt the pain of the poor. Consequently, a misery index means little to them.

BTW as having one of the best minds [according to DR] on the thread, I may not be posting to you as much. I would hate to upstaged. I'm sure you understand.
