NEW YORK (AFP) - Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry (news - web sites), battling dollar-to-dollar with President George W. Bush (news - web sites) in the fund-raising sweepstakes, counted on a star-studded concert here to raise another seven million dollars.

More than a dozen stars were lined up for the extravaganza at New York's historic Radio City Music Hall, ranging from hip-hop heavyweights Mary J. Blige and Wyclef Jean to actors Paul Newman, Meryl Streep and Whoopi Goldberg.

A statement said more than 5,500 spectators paying from 250 to 25,000 dollars a ticket will be on hand, raising an expected seven million dollars for the Kerry campaign and the Democratic National Committee (news - web sites).

The event came two weeks after a similar gala was held in Los Angeles, and it capped the second day of joint campaigning by Kerry and his new vice presidential running-mate John Edwards (news - web sites).

Kerry has been increasingly successful in raising money for his drive to oust Bush from the White House in the November 2 election.

His campaign said last week it had picked up 180 million dollars so far, compared to 210 million dollars for the Republican incumbent. Kerry took in 34 million dollars in June alone.

Also on the bill for Thursday's concert were rockers Jon Bon Jovi, the Dave Matthews Band and John Fogerty, singer John Mellencamp, comics Chevy Chase and John Leguizamo, and actresses Jessica Lange and Sarah Jessica Parker.
