BARONESS THATCHER is to blame for the breakdown of respect in modern Britain, a teachers’ union leader said yesterday.

Brian Galvin, the new president of the National Union of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers (NASUWT), said that the former Prime Minister had done more harm “than anyone else in modern times”.

He told the union’s annual conference in Birmingham that in her time in office, which ended nearly 16 years ago, traditional social relationships had been wrecked and the seeds of the yob culture afflicting modern Britain had been sown.

“I make no apology in adding my name to the long list of people who feel that Margaret Thatcher did more harm to the society in which we live than anyone else in modern times,” Mr Galvin said. “The ‘I’m all right, Jack’ culture which she encouraged did more to destroy our society’s social structures than anything else did. I also believe it set us on the road to a society where there is far less respect than at any time in our recent history.” >>>
