Very very few people are able to separate what is good for them from what is good for their society. I see this professionally all the time. When I go consulting for companies and I talk to the stakeholders about possible solutions, invariably every group thinks the solution that requires the least amount of work/change on their part is the best solution. I've never met one who though, gee this works well for me but it would be really costly to the other team and we should not go there. The same goes for various political stakeholders (including conservatives, btw).

Thanks for the song. Loved Steely Dan...great music and great sense of humor to boot!
