I am a msft bull, but they really blew it with these practices with the boxmakers...

Actually this is the common business practice not the exception. It's similar to car dealers. Car dealers had to sign agreements stating they could not own a competition's car line. That ment they could own several car dealerships but only from the same car line, ex. only Chevy, only Ford, no Oldsmobile, no Mercury no mixing.

Then if you were big enough and fought with the manufacture they would relent and let you own a different car line. As the best dealerships grew, they had a great impact on the car manufacture so they could do more of what they wanted.

Today it is not uncommon to have one dealership sell many different car lines.

The automobile manufactures were never taken to court on this issue. There was a different mentality back then.
