<How the hell are all these countries, the carriers, the vendors going to duplicate the circumstances that created one GSM network for Europe? I think there is a false impression that WCDMA is a migration path for this GSM network when in fact, it will be a bunch of islands for years before they can link them together to resemble network.>

Not only will Europe be an island, the world will be full of them.

Korea - CDMA/CDMA1XEV (all carriers)
China - GSM/1X(EV) (Unicom)
Japan - PDC/WCDMA (NTT)
Japan - PDC/UMTS (J Phone)
Japan - CDMA/CDMA1XEV (KDDI)
US - CDMA/CDMA1XEV (VZ, PCS, LWIN, Metro)
US - iDEN/Direct Connect 1xEV (Nextel)

The upgrade pathway from 2G to 3G is going to destroy hegemony by any one player. No one will be selling phones in China, Japan, or Korea except for the local phone makers. The same will happen in India too.
