Re: government computers - this afternoon wrestled with both the sublime (Fairfax Circuit Court land records) and the ridiculous (Fairfax General District Court criminal records). I have no idea why the one is so awful but I know why the other is so good - the Clerk of the Court likes computers and uses them a lot, also he got feedback from users, and listened to it.

Amazing what a difference that makes. Amazing how horrible it can be when that doesn't happen.

Meanwhile - in our local federal court, the records which are more than ten years old are on 3x5 cards in a manual card catalogue, which doesn't have backup is my understanding. If you wanted to clear your record, they're there for you to access. Crazy.
