Could someone help define book value and explain it's significance for me?

I'm assuming it's something like adding up some assets (cash, accounts receivable, inventory, land-in-fremont, etc); and subtracting off some liabilities (debt, accounts payable, etc); then dividing by the number of shares.
If so, does anyone remember what the breakdown of their assets were?
