ChromeOS merger suggests Google is noticing the PC market

Chipmaker Qualcomm might have stuck its Snapdragon X series into Windows laptops, but now it's sniffing around Android too.

The chipmaker’s Snapdragon X2 chips were first shown off in September and are due to arrive in Windows machines in spring 2026. Now the dark satanic rumour mill is manufacturing a hell on earth yarn claiming that they’ll be popping up in Android boxes as well.

Qualcomm has started adding Android support to its X series, suggesting Android-based laptops might finally become a thing. Given Google’s supposed plans to merge ChromeOS and Android, this could be the first clue that Mountain View has realised people still use computers.

The current state of Android on laptops is best described as "not worth the effort", but if Qualcomm can be bothered and Google stops mucking about with pointless UI ideas, there might finally be something to show.

Google’s long-overdue attempt to standardise Android builds for larger screens might give us a proper Android desktop experience, but it's a gamble.

Qualcomm’s silicon already works on Windows, so making it Android-friendly isn’t the problem. The real issue will be whether Google can build a usable interface that doesn’t feel like a tablet trapped in a keyboard.

This could shake things up, assuming someone at Google finishes it.
