Eisenhower was forced to send in troops because of a Supreme Court ruling.
The Supreme Court is no commander and chief. It did not and could not force Eisenhower to deploy the 101st or any other army unit.
You are funny. The SC said integrate the schools; the southerners did not want their schools integrated. When in the past Eisenhower had not send in troops, riots and civil unrest ensued. Therefore he had no choice.....he was required to enforce the ruling of the SC.......its part of the checks and balances system. The best way to do that was to send in troops. He had no real choice in the matter............he either maintained law and order or he did not. What president is stupid enough to let rioting break out helter skelter? The gov't would be in jeopardy.
Besides, the racist level of the GOP increased dramatically after Eisenhower when the Dixiecrats bolted the Dems and went to the GOP. Now why would avowed racists bolt the Dems and join the GOP. Think about it!
Its been a long time since the GOP has been an inclusive party; to whit, Bush refusing to speak to the NAACP.
Speaking to the NAACP is not a good sign of inclusiveness, not speaking to the NAACP is not a good sign of lack of inclusiveness.
Yes, it is......however, its not as big a sign now that I know he spoke to the Urban League.
Why was the GOP Senator from MS asked to turn down the Majority leader position?
He had been successfully portrayed as "racially insensitive", and thus he became a political liability. Did he really deserve the axe? No he didn't but politics isn't about just rewards and punishments, political appointments and positions are often about image and popularity.
There are reasons why he was considered racially insensitive. Wasn't he one of the original Dixiecrats?
Why did the Senator from NC have an illegal mulatto child but promoted segregation and ran for president on a segregationist ticket?
Yes he had been racist but not as much so as Byrd. And Byrd kept getting the strong support of his party for decades. It not like he was appointed to a Senate leadership position in the 40s. He was a Dem leader in the senate not all that long ago.
We are not talking about one Dem. We are talking about a number of GOP congresspeople. Try to stay on topic. Thanks.
Why did the 60s dixiecrats flee the Dem. party which was supporting integration and run to the Republican party?
The Republicans where mostly supporting integration too, except perhaps white Republicans from the South. The Dixiecrats had long been more conservative then the Dems in general but while the Dems would stay with them on segregation they had a reason to stay with the Dems. Once both parties where for integration there was no reason for the Dixiecrats to stay with the party that was further away from them on other issues.
In other words, the GOP was not very committed to integration and was willing to fight it on a number of different levels and did right up to and including Reagan's presidency.
Why is the GOP pushing so hard to keep gays from marrying?
Its pushing hard to keep a few state judges and officials from imposing their opinion on the country.
Why are they afraid of what was in your words only a few judges and officials in this country? How could so few be such a threat that the GOP would propose a constitutional amendment that would be the first to restrict our powers rather than expand them?
Are you suggesting that Byrd and Bush are on the same level in terms of stature? Hey dude, you said it, not I.
No they are not. But if a Republican member of the Senate leadership made such a statement we would also never hear the end of it, unless perhaps the end was to force him out of the leadership position or perhaps even out of the Senate completely.
Once again, Byrd is one member of the Dem. party.........he has many more contemporaries in the GOP. That's why its more of an issue with the GOP.
Well, there is no question that you've pegged Byrd. Why can't you do the same with the racists in the GOP party?
