You are making assumptions. You are assuming that the gay people that wanted to get married were "left", or the judges that allowed them to get married were "left". Can you back that up?

They are on the side of the issue that is considered "left" in this case. There opponents are often considered to be "conservative" but many of them are not on some issues.

If you want to argue that judges that claim there is a right to gay marriage or the local officials that perform them even without such judicial support are not on the left fine. I don't find such a claim to be particularly reasonable but its not worth fighting. Whether you call them "left" or not, the people who are trying to change the status quo are the people who made this an issue at this time.

re: "That isn't true." <The only reason the Republicans raised the issue in the Senate is because they thought they could make political hay in an election year.>

Of course it's true.

It is true that many of them where trying to make political hay in an election year. It is not true that it is the only reason for their actions and positions.

Even some of the Republicans (McCain for one, your hero) were disgusted.

McCain is no hero of mine. I don't think I would consider any current politician to be a hero of mine. I'd vote for McCain against any prominent Democratic politician but he hardly has to be my hero for that.
