A glance at some industry trends for the holidays
From the December 18, 2000 print edition

Notebooks

With regard to computers, particularly notebooks, we continue to see increases in the
speed and the size of hard drives. It is not unusual to see a processor speed in the 850
MHz range and hard drives as large as 20 GB. One thing that is new, however, is that
some systems now have increased security features. I have seen a system that uses
fingerprint security in place of a password. Other systems rely on an external card for
system security. The trend here is to provide individuals with tighter security so that
sensitive information stored on notebooks won't fall into the wrong hands.
