I just came across the following in an HWP press release. A couple of questions: 1) Is this an alternative solution to I20, or just a temporary, incremental improvement on what currently exists? 2) Does WIND have anything to do with this? I ask because I believe that WIND has many different projects that are on-going with Hewlett-Packard.
Thanks in advance for any insight.

Adaptec Solutions Boost HP's Kayak PC Workstation I/O Performance Up to 80%
Adaptec and HP Demonstrate Importance of I/O As They Set New PC Workstation I/O Speed Record
MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 9, 1997--Adaptec Inc. announced that its RAIDport II and UltraSCSI chip technology accelerate the disk I/O performance of Hewlett-Packard Company's Kayak PC workstations (announced today in New York) by up to 80%(a), allowing HP to establish the new systems amongst the fastest PC workstations in their class.
The performance boost is achieved through data caching (maximizing data flow) data striping (storing data across two or more disk drives simultaneously) and the adoption of Adaptec's dual channel SCSI architecture for improved bandwidth management. These features reduce the workload of the CPU and accelerate total system performance.
HP is the recognized leader in PC workstation computing, with over 37% market share according to recent Dataquest figures. Adaptec is the market leader in PC and server bandwidth management solutions that eliminate I/O bottlenecks using high performance technology like SCSI and RAID.
``Adaptec helps deliver the fastest products in the marketplace because we understand the critical role I/O plays in overall systems performance,'' said Grant Saviers, chairman and CEO of Adaptec. ``Our UltraSCSI and RAID development teams contributed their expertise to HP as they created these innovative new products.''
``Adaptec's RAIDport and UltraSCSI contribute significantly to making the HP Kayak PC Workstation one of the fastest Windows NT workstations on the market,'' said Jean-Charles Miard, general manager of HP's Performance Desktop Computing Operation.
The Adaptec ARO-1130CA RAIDport II array adapter, and its Adaptec AIC-7880 UltraSCSI chipset will be branded ``Fast/RAID'' by HP, and will be a standard component on many HP Kayak XU and XW PC Workstation models, and an option on all. Adaptec's partnership with HP is specifically designed to leverage Adaptec I/O performance expertise, including RAID on the motherboard, UltraSCSI and high speed data caching.
Target markets for the new HP systems include financial applications, two and three dimensional graphics applications, design and software development.
HP is one of a number of OEMs currently planning to incorporate Adaptec solutions in PC workstation-class systems.
About Adaptec RAIDport II and UltraSCSI
RAIDport II is Adaptec's scaleable RAID (Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks) solution integrating the performance of Adaptec SCSI (AIC-7880) and RAID (ARO-1130CA) in Pentium Pro and Pentium II platforms. Adaptec RAIDport is designed to make high performance desktop and server I/O systems more affordable and simpler to the end-user.
