If people want an example of despair they should look at real refugee camps, the likes of which one sees in Afghanistan or elsewhere in the world. The Palestinian situation is more comparable to living in a crime ridden housing project, where those living there are generally at the mercy of the gangs "running things", stabbings, racket, police aggression (the few times they dare to set foot in the projects), unemployment, no future... There are a lot of those in Europe, at least I'm familiar with the ones in France having been assaulted one night on the RER returning to my apartment in Orsay by a few gang members from the projects in Les Ulis nearby. And Les Ulis is not a major trouble spot either compared to Seine St Denis (la banlieue nord) but you should see some of the fauna on the public transportation anyhow.
