Hi Dave...the dogs are extremely overjoyed to be "mushed-to-death"!

Dogs are not my favorite animals...but I don't condone the abuse of dogs. The dogs seem to enjoy the race...and the "pack" aspect of the "team"...I wouldn't say that the Iditerod is a reflection of our societies basic disrespect for life/nature...although I do find the entire event to be a frivolous demonstration of the human ego at work exploiting, for entertainment value, what was once a serious method of transportation. Abuse in this case would be to deliberatly not feed them during the race...or to underfeed them.

Answer: Using animals...including humans, for gratuitous violence would be my qualifier for "animal cruelty". I would put the Iditerod into the "frivolous exploitation" category, along with things like some "pro-sports", (ie., "big-time wrestling", "football", "boxing/Tyson", etc.), "cock-fighting" and "roller derby".

If there are a lot of dogs dying during the race...then I would agree that it is no longer merely "exploitative"...it becomes abusive if the dogs don't survive intact. I feel the same about horse and greyhound racing...the animals well being is a primary concern.
