Two additional thoughts on Intel's strategic position.

First, I've been noticing in the last few weeks that an awful lot of 'net enabled devices run on the SGI Mips chip - including WebTV. Just had lunch with one of my smartest young programmer friends. He was explaining that Mips is a RISC chip that has been around for a while. I'll bet that the cost is around $25, versus $800 or so for the newest Intel x86 architecture. Said friend tells me that a Java Virtual Machine sitting on top of this architecture would have a big performance advantage over x86 - something to do with multithreading. I appreciate all of the posts here about AMD and Cyrix, but perhaps we should at least consider expanding the potential Intel competitors outside the x86 architecture.

Second point, which I may have made before, is that Intel is diluting the value of its Pentium brand by subdividing. Pentium. Pentium Classic. Pentium with MMX. Pentium II. For the average person, this pretty much takes away the sense of knowing what the heck they are doing. The new Intel commercials with the Pentium II road trip gang just strike me as robotic (not even any human faces) and confusing.

And I'm someone who actually understands what these chips do.

Bottom line, Intel Inside may be eroding too. If WebTV takes off, and has a MSFT name associated with it, I don't expect many people to turn to Sony or Mitsubishi and say 'why doesn't it have Intel Inside?"
