Innovation: the pick of the latest patent applications

Optical circulator routes signals in two directions
In WO 01/88603, Avanex, a US manufacturer of optical subsystems,
describes a bidirectional optical circulator for use within an
optical communications system. The company claims that the circulator
can perform bidirectional wavelength-division multiplexing,
bidirectional add-drop multiplexing, bidirectional amplification,
three-way channel separation and two- and three-way multiplexing. The
circulator has a number of ports that are identified in a specific
sequence. A first wavelength input through one port is output through
the next port in the sequence, and not from any other port. A second
wavelength input through a chosen port will be output through the
preceding port in the sequence.
