I don't think anyone on this thread thinks ethanol is the right solution, nor do I think anyone thinks subsidies for ethanol are a good thing.

I do think increasing the price of gas to reflect the true cost to our country is a good thing, as long as we reduce the other subsidies related to it, like the use of our military to secure our oil supplies.

Let's say we stopped securing our oil supplies with US military. Then oil companies would have to hire Blackwater-like security agencies to do the same. Then that extra cost would be passed on to consumers and the price of oil and gas would be much closer to a fair market value price.

Also, I'd rather we tax gas than institute a cap and trade program. Cap and trade is well-intentioned, but it has a lot of moving parts that can be manipulated and I think we can all agree on this thread that the government is not an efficient administrator. So a gas tax would accomplish the same thing with much less overhead and chance for manipulation. If we took the revenues from an increased gas tax and used it for alternative energy, then we'd be growing one industry at the expense of another with little overall economic side-effect during the transition, but long term economic benefits from not being addicted to oil and gas in the future.
