Wrong Mark, MSFT purchased DOS fom Seattle Computers for approx. $50K. Seattle needed the cash and they had no idea that IBM was very secretly shopping for a PC operating system at the time.

CP/M has it's roots in DEC's (now compaq's) RT-11 operating system, for the PDP-11 and an arguement can me made that CP/M was stolen from DEC.

Bill Gates was called upon by IBM because he wrote a 4K-byte BASIC interpreter that ran on the intel 8080 chip. IBM figured that he was qualified to do an operating system. Bill told him that he didn't have one (eventually), but said he could get one!
