Japan's Rakuten To Beef Up US Ops, Eyes B-To-B Market Ops

TOKYO -- Rakuten Inc. (J.RKN or 4755), an operator of an online shopping mall and auction site, will set up a unit in San Francisco capitalized at $5.0 million to expand business operations in the U.S., Rakuten said Monday.

Rakuten USA Inc. will carry out research of U.S. companies for possible business developments and investments, the Japanese companies said.

Separately, Rakuten said it will fully subsidize ProTrade Inc., a business-to-business e-commerce market operator, by buying all of the 600 issued shares in ProTrade from third party firms for a total of Y230 million.

Rakuten aims to enter business-to-business market operations, it said.
