Calcasieu Deputy and Father Dead of Apparent Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

Calcasieu Sheriff's Deputy Eric Joseph Bellard and his father Dannis have died of apparent carbon monoxide poisoning from a generator.

The father and son were staying inside a room in a barn like structure at the family home at 983 Sistrunk Road in Moss Bluff. Investigators say the Bellards had set up a generator in the barn, but apparently fumes found their way into the room where they were staying. When Bellard did not report to work this morning, a deputy went to the home to look for him.

Sheriff Tony Mancuso reported the tragedy to the public at a news conference this afternoon. He says Bellard worked for eight years in the Enforcement Division as was the 2007 Deputy of the Year for that division. Mancuso's voice was choked with emotion as he spoke of the 27 year old deputy. "We at the Sheriff's Office are saddened and devastated by this tragedy," he says. "He was a fine deputy and will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

The sheriff's department is awaiting toxicology results from Coroner Dr. Terry Welke to confirm the apparent carbon monoxide poisoning.
