Dean used as the pretext for his new attack reports that former senator Robert G. Torricelli (D-N.J.), a Kerry fundraiser who bailed out of his reelection campaign in 2002 because of ethics problems, had contributed $50,000 from his Senate campaign fund to a secretive committee called Americans for Jobs & Health Care that ran nasty, anti-Dean ads in December. Gephardt supporters also contributed to the committee.

"What it says is the front-runner for the Democratic nomination is a product of the sort of politically corrupt culture of Washington," Dean said in an interview. "It's not the message we want to send."

Dean said Kerry and Democratic insiders "are so desperate to win this race they're willing to be like Republicans to do it. Well that's not the Democratic Party that I'm trying to create and reorient, and it's a terrible disappointment to me. I think Kerry's going to be a weak nominee if he gets the nomination."

Dean reiterated his pledge to support whichever Democrat wins the nomination, but said he does not believe the Kerry campaign's denials that anyone knew Torricelli had given money to the committee. He said that, while he has no proof, "it strains credulity" to think the Kerry campaign knew nothing about it.

Asked whether he believes Kerry had acted unethically during the campaign, Dean said: "I'm not going to comment on that."
