It has a lot to do with Iraq. It is the fundamental argument of AQ.

AQ has this in common with the old Marxists like that author, that their view of reality is almost completely formed by their ideology. Our interest in "colonizing" Iraq is zilch. If the author had even cared about sounding plausible outside of his own circle, he would have talked about propping up a puppet government.

Actually, I have never even heard AQ claim it - their focus is Muslim "humiliation" by having infidels meddle in Muslim lands at all - "80 years of humiliation" etc.

What caught my eye initially was the kernels of truth in what he wrote.

I submit that you will find such kernels of truth in any piece of decently written propaganda. Doesn't mean one should expect them to have thought deeply about your particular situation.
