A looming political defeat for Pelosi, non-astute Democrats, and Netroots Defeatists
Austin Bay blog

The AP via, AT&T's website.

The lede:

Top House Democrats retreated Monday from an attempt to limit President Bush's authority for taking military action against Iran as the leadership concentrated on a looming confrontation with the White House over the Iraq war.

Officials said Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other members of the leadership had decided to strip from a major military spending bill a requirement for Bush to gain approval from Congress before moving against Iran.

Conservative Democrats as well as lawmakers concerned about the possible impact on Israel had argued for the change in strategy.

The Dems have rhetorically catered to their "netroots" (nutroots) constituency; however, at some reptilian (amphibian) level in their brains they know they cannot risk delivering a victory to Al Qaeda and the Saddamists. ANd that is what they risk.

Another quote, this one from Speaker Pelosi:

Pelosi issued a written statement that said the vice president's remarks prove that "the administration's answer to continuing violence in Iraq is more troops and more treasure from the American people…

No, Madame Speaker. It's perseverance. Alas, Baby Boomers get antsy when a Big Mac is two minutes late. Lack of patience is America's greatest strategic weakness.

Smart Dems know they have been playing a game of rhetorical snooker with the "netroots." Clipping the commander in chiefs constitutional authority is risky under any circumstances, but inexcusable in the midst of a war. The verbal promises and protests are a childish and irresponsible form of political pandering. If they only had domestic political effects that would be one thing, but these antics encourage the terrorists. Al Qaeda thinks America will withdraw from Iraq, like it did under Clinton in Somalia. Smart Democrats know that is the grim reality.
