Clinton Too Sick to Help Kerry

Ex-President Bill Clinton is still too sick to help John Kerry on the campaign trail, confounding earlier predictions that he would bounce back from quadruple heart bypass surgery and be stumping for Kerry by now.

Clinton's recuperation has been "slower than he anticipated," friends and associates tell the Washington Post.

Continuing fatigue and warnings from his doctors will prevent him from making "more than a few cameo appearances on behalf of the Democratic nominee," they say, adding that they're not sure he'll be able to do even that much.
The ex-president's recovery regimen includes mile-long walks, but he "finds himself exhausted after each jaunt," friends told the Post. "And he remains in considerable pain from the chest incision."

In the days after Clinton's Sept. 6 procedure, many of his former advisers were full of predictions about the ease with which patients can return to their routine after modern heart surgery, the paper noted.

But that optimism, apparently driven by politics, has largely faded.

While the Kerry campaign still hopes the popular Democrat will be able to squeeze in a few appearances in African-American churches in battleground states, Clinton's only firm plans include presiding over the opening of his presidential library in Little Rock shortly after the election.
