------------------------------------------------------------------------ ALL SINGAPORE Telecom subscribers will be able to access a wide range of text, video and on-line services right from their computer keyboards come October, when SingTel's Magix broadband multimedia network goes islandwide.
SingTel has drawn up a range of multimedia services including 400 hours of movies and television blockbusters on demand, round-the-clock financial news provided by Bloomberg and Reuters, online shopping, interactive learning, multi-user 3-D games, MTV videos and video chat lines.
"Presently, only telephone users living within the exchange boundaries of Ayer Rajah, Bedok, Bukit Timah, Central, City, City South, Orchard and Telok Blangah exchanges can enjoy these services," Paul Chong, SingTel's assistant vice-president of Consumer Sales, said yesterday.
By October, almost every Singapore household will be able to access Magix once all 27 SingTel telephone exchanges nationwide are configured to provide this service.
Mr Chong says SingTel's effort to develop Magix for commercial use will amount to "several dozens of million, but less than S$50 million" by December.
To access Magix, customers need to upgrade their PCs with an Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Lines (ADSL) modem and an ATM interface card. SingTel aims to market these upgrade kits at about $600. Magix users pay a one-time registration fee of $30 and a monthly subscription of $25. Access charges are 5 cents per minute ($3 per hour). |
