You wrote that up like a good research paper! After reading half your links I realized you were actually doing a great job of creating the flow.

You know, that was still a century and a half before the influence of such thinkers as McCabe and Ingersoll began to be seriously felt across the civilized world.

Yes, it seemed to them that damaging belief in the invisible world of spirits and witches could not help but undermine the foundation of belief in...well...the invisible world! As you say, "we must have order & you must take your medication !!" ;o)

How very apropos!

People were developing the capacity and the courage to question the superstitious; but this very capacity to reason allowed them to recognise that spirits and witches were no less a subset of the supernatural world than the Judeo-Christian narrative and that logically any cherrypicking was capricious. Therefore, to invent a clumsy metaphor, if the supernatural world is the bathwater...denying any of the babies logically brings into question the reality of all of them. And indeed that is the case. We have now climbed another rung on the ladder to intellectual freedom and we are ready to admit that it is not rational to deny the entire invisible world--to remove truth value across the board--while still keeping our corner of it as though it had truth value. Eventually people will need to understand--just as they came to understand the issue of witches: Any attempt to discount the validity of Islam (witches) or Judaism (witches of a different color)...calls into question your own witches--whatever they may be. You cannot logically give a substantial structure to an invisible and imagined world. Sheep can be forced. Yes. But it is ONLY force that can operate to persuade that a particular invisible world be accepted on common and reasoned grounds. Because reasoning cannot enter into it. And does force further the forward march of Evolution. I don't think so...

Reason has absolutely no building blocks to further the cause of humanity in a superstitious realm. So we need to let the supernatural go. It has no value. Everything imagined is simply imagined. Claims built on imagined authority are simply a proxy for force and not reason. I do not, of course, mean let the unknown go! That is an entirely different matter. The unknown actually exists so closing our eyes will have no effect on it...

And it goes without saying that imagination is one of our greatest and most essential assets. It is even ok to imagine there is a god behind the clouds! (Why not!) Just provide evidence if you wish to act as his proxy. And force is not evidence. :-)
