That isn't a good reason to believe it never happened. Individual cases of one person spitting on another can happen more then once without being newsworthy or leaving a trail that could be easily researched. And that's assuming you trust the authors and their research 100%. If there is any doubt on that issue all their claims go right out the window.

Edit - On the other hand it is a good reason to think that such an occurance was at worst rare, unless you totally discount their research and they haven't given me any reason to do that. But then even without their research I would have thought it was rare.
