I have no idea why people vote the way they do, but I am amazed at the depth of ...dislike...that is now sloshing around in this country, much of it fermenting against this administration. My relatives, I'm sure I have mentioned, are Ky Southern Baptists. They like to vote for the Godliest candidate- it's sort of a "Who would Jesus vote for?" kind of thing. They liked that Bush got his orders from God. They loved his coded evangelist talk. However, their affection for his talks with God seems to have dimmed lately, and my aunt in Paducah is actually talking about working for the democrats. Granted, one of my relatives has Gulf War Syndrome- so this new war has an emotional resonance for the family back there, but I imagine that is true for a lot of families in the mid- American states.

I've been surprised as anything to see the change in my relatives. I am not going to generalize from an anecdote- but if this is happening in a lot of other families, I'd say the election is pretty wide open, and even a lefty like Gore could win.
