i would hesitate to predict that a migration from w98 to w2k would be smooth. in many cases, i'm sure that it would be. but who's to say you will be among that group? plenty of stories exist about hardware and software compatibility issues with w2k.
the key, then, imo, is preparation. but i tend to be long in that department, where some others may be more prone to forging ahead and dealing with circumstances as they present themselves.
perhaps you can best answer your own question, armed with the knowledge that w2k can sometimes be a beast to install. are you personally up to the task? how do you react to troubles and complications when they arise with your pc? are you able to spend time with seeking out solutions? do you believe in research beforehand?
as you can easily see, this thread is populated by people from both sides of the troubleshooting and repair fence.... there's them that do and them that don't. <g3>
i will give you this word of caution.... when you elect to upgrade to w2k, there's no turning back to w98. it was with this in mind that i chose to install win2000pro on its own separate partition, and dual boot with win98se. i wanted the luxury and convenience of being able to fall back on an os that i knew was working, should the new os behave poorly.
that said, there are more than a few thread members who are now running win2000pro, and you should be able to draw from their collective wisdom and helpfulness in that area. that's a big plus.

i am sorry, no. i acquired the full standalone version in a terrific trade, and never had to research that.
