The masses are craving more bandwidth, and many people say they're willing to pay for it. To the optimistic carrier, equipment vendor and venture capitalist, the enabling technology, asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL), looks like a dream come true.

Carriers such as Bell Atlantic and Nynex maintain that rate-adaptive ADSL (RADSL) will save them the trouble and cost of having to spend a lot of time qualifying local loop plant to ensure that the copper is capable of delivering the service as promised (see related story on page 14). RADSL functions like a dial-up modem; it senses the bandwidth capabilities of the copper loop and adjusts the transmission speed (up or down) accordingly.
