Yes, I remember the horror stories of Britain's high tax rate. And
your point about ". England has only just become industrially competitive some 15 years after ..." is quite apropos. This tax burden stifled a world power, reducing it to a second tier economy.

Please don't take this as an insult to Great Britain. I greatly admire the country and its people. But, the more stones you hang around someone's head, the SLOWER that someone walks.

TAXES, and excessive TAXES in particular, are disencentives. The higher the taxes on corporations and individuals, the less productivity will be forthcoming.

Quite simple, in my mind.
