The basic building blocks of all minerals (although perhaps not amorphous entities like opals)are ordered atomic structures. Larger atoms of elements like magnesium or aluminum fit into specific sites (M3). However, that is academia. As an economic geologist, I would be more interested in how microclusters differ from 'ordinary' atomic strata in minerals, and exploration and assaying implications.

I'm no physical chemist (beyond basic atomic theory and s-p-d-f stuff), but would mono - and tri-valent gold play a part? Would mega ions be detectable by any assaying method at all? Incidentally, no one uses fire assay for background gold values. How about AA or ICP? Enzyme leach? Any examples of specific environments? Am I still on the subject?

Good thread. Exciting stuff, this!
