I wanted to point out that the pension fund issue is claimed to be the "real issue", and on this point I think the union position (in bold above) is unreasonable.

There are two issues. One is the pension fund and I think that the money involved here is something the union doesn't want to give up. UPS has proposed a split-trustee (half union, half UPS) plan that they say will provide higher benefits for less years of service for less cost. Where, I wonder, is the difference going now?

The second is that this is a message to other shippers that they'd better tow the union line or, "By god, if we can hurt UPS we can KILL you." You see this with the UAW and the automakers, where they negotiate with and strike against one company and whatever is worked out is accepted by the other companies.
