Stitch, to me the "vertical integration" versus the outsourcing model is a dynamic debate. Won't each always have their day in the cycle? It will be better to vertically integrate in boom times, and better to outsource in lean times. Vertical integration gives more sure lines of supply and economies of scale. Outsourcing makes a company more agile and better able to ratchet down production in down times, and change sources of materials in times of technological transition. You guys that are much more knowledgeable than I in DD science ought to debate that. I would say it does seem to me that the pace of change has been remarkable to me. Thin film heads to MR to GMR is happening awfully quickly.

But turning to the other part of your statement/question about which companies are doing the most to enhance shareholder value...I think a new thread gives us the chance to step back several steps and take a fresh look. One thing that is really remarkable to me is the contrast in SEG. A company that is the market leader in DD production. This business is perceived by many as a cyclical commodity business. Yet under the same roof, we have these three software assets: the VRTS stake, the retained SEG Software assets, and the Dragon stake. Dragon is the market leader in Speech Recognition. Speech Recognition just might be the next killer app, setting direction for hardware and software alike. Everything in the box might be affected if this area reaches its potential.

SEG runs the gamut from "deep cyclical" to "killer app".
