Hmmmm... very interesting.

I'm working on an SDMI article for E-media Professional, so I'm up on the technology.

MCY is a member of SDMI, but pretty much anyone can join.

sdmi.org

NexTrax is not currently SDMI compliant although they give you that impression.

As far as SDMI compliant MP3, all you have to do is throw an ARIS watermark in the content for phase I. Players are responsible for detecting the watermark and refusing to play if its in the stream. Phase II is more complex, but that's well into 2000.

SDMI does NOT define any encryption technology and their FAQ leads to me to believe they either have NO CLUE or their marketing folks have no clue or both.

Now it looks like they claim to have encrypted the mp3 content. This is beyond the scope of SDMI as SDMI does not define file formats or encryption standards. IMHO, proprietary DRM systems have minimal chance of success since it locks the consumer into a particular player.

A legitimate development stage company that appears to dominate the newly emerging DRM field is Intertrust. I'm seriously looking at their IPO for a potential investment.

The big key here is that Intertrust offers a toolkit rather than a proprietary player. This is why the big boys are interested.

Here are some links to keep you busy:

Alas, no shares at DLJ :-(
