i feel compelled to post about my recent experience with IB. I have had an ira account with them for over 10 years.. no particular issues. i struggled to figure out one thing but eventually they responded and i could understand the calculations. so i decided to open a margin account and move some securities over from ameritrade to take advantage of the lower margin rates they advertise. boy was that a mistake. it turns out that if you have a problem customer service is difficult to come by and has not solved anything for me.
the account opened no problem. the securities transferred over. everything was fine until i tried to trade. all i got were trading permissions insufficient to allow trading. after several hours and days starting arouind december 29 i got a commitment that someone would email the proper people to get it taken of . then arouind january 6 i got a message from a manager that it would escalated to a development team. that was the last response from them. On january 13 I had enough of not being able to trade and their virtual customer service. and filled out paperwork with amertrade to get the securities transferred back to them. On January 15 amertrade notified me that IB has rejected the transfer request. and that is where we sit today january 22.
I have complained and also contacted FINRA. So if you are ok with non existent customer service , aggravation, and not being able to trade in your account. Interactive Broker is the place for you. As for me i doubt I will do any more business with them. I am only happy that I did not transfer my entire account over to them. I do think its telling that if you go to the investor website at interactive broker they are very adamant about not wanting to hear any complaints about their service there. so if you are an investor interactive brokers good luck to you.
