14.4 million 3G subscribers in Japan (Jan 2004)

Subscriber numbers for 3G services in Japan for January 2004 are:

DoCoMo: 2,013,700
KDDI/AU: 12,264,200
Vodafone: 122,800
--------------------
Total 14,400,700

Generally speaking 3G has gone mainstream in Japan since about spring 2003.
Before spring 2003 essentially only "early adopters", e.g. people
in software companies or internet companies, etc were 3G users, and many
(including myself) used a 3G phone as a second or third phone for testing,
while their primary phone is a traditional 2G phone. KDDI/AU went "mainstream"
before DoCoMo's FOMA.

However this changed in Summer 2003. Since Summer 2003 the general
population is buying FOMA phones, many people probably don't know
anything about 2G or 3G or other technical details.
