'Let It Snow!' They Cry On the Options Exchange [WSJ]

By GREGORY ZUCKERMAN
February 11, 2006

[excerpt]

Later this month, the Chicago Mercantile Exchange will begin to trade snowfall futures and options contracts, the latest in a string of eyebrow-raising derivative-trading ideas. Not all of them have taken hold. With Valentine's Day around the corner, some traders recall the failed bid to start a diamond-futures contract.

Snowfall futures will be based on a CME Snowfall Index initially offered on two cities: Boston and New York. Buying these contracts could allow companies and investors to protect positions that might be affected by a big snowstorm, such as shares of a big East Coast retailer with earnings at risk from a blizzard.
