It occurs to me that the recent outbreak of violence against lawmakers who voted for healthcare bill will only give the gov't. justification for clamping down in just the way that the brick throwers are protesting to prevent.

Give gov't an excuse to do what you are protesting?

Perhaps civil disobedience has merit if one wants to bring about change without giving the opposition ample excuses to hasten moves to more harsh martial laws and trampling of civil rights.

If we don't give gov't. a reason, then any moves toward more harsh moves/martial law will be seen more clearly for what they are?

Just thinking out loud while observing emotions running amok perhaps to the detriment of the stated goals.
