They do have a strong patent portfolio. Actually the reason CORV has morphed into a carrier is they lost a patent suit to CIEN (the chairman of corv, or at least the one from a few yrs back, was from cien).

The problem with CIEN and SCMR (also known for giving terrible cc's lately but that's because thier end market is terrible) is the carriers are in no rush to upgrade or expand by acquiring their products.

As for acquisitions its been a problem throughout this whole correction. The competitors still have plenty of cash to compete and are not willing to sell out. The recent recession, as bloody as it was, did not take out enough of the competition.
