That point in the article where he suggests that Lu and IBM and various Japanese companies are getting into the ASIC business is a little misleading.
I remember during the capacity glut a few years back that several dram makers were going to get into the SOC/ASIC market; and where are they now? Answer; they failed miserably and at that time they took business away from lsi with bargain basement prices for their silicon and just screwed up the whole market.
Anybody that gets into the ASIC business better have the best suite of design tools available(from different vendors and all working together -LIKE LSI DOES)or they're going to be doing a lot of silicon level debugging at speed(300Mhz and good luck if your problem is at metal 1 on a six layer process). LSI's philosophy, for years, is time to market and right the first time. So forget about the competition- they've always had deeper pockets and LSI is kicking their ass.

As far as lu, IBM or even intc being a threat; they are all currently customers of lsi. I don't want to say how I know this or where i get my info...blah ,blah. Believe me or not.

I'm waiting for some products from the SEEQ acquisition! How about a 8-port phyter CORE!

Yes I have some Oct 60's, only a few contracts I got at $1.00.

This a great company barring any yield crashes and should be $100.00 byQ2'00.

Regards,
A lurker waiting for the blast off.
